Improving Search Outcomes Through Evidence-Based Firefighter Training

Firefighter Rescues Ontario and Pitman Safety Solutions are proud to partner in delivering Data for Life-Search Academy, an innovative firefighter training program designed to improve the speed, effectiveness, and safety of victim search operations. This program bridges proven research, real-world incident data, firefighter survivability studies, and modern search techniques to help firefighters make better decisions when seconds matter most.

Traditional search training often focuses on technique. Data for Life-Search Academy goes further by examining where victims are commonly found, how fire conditions affect survivability, occupant behaviour during emergencies, and the factors that contribute to successful rescues. Using findings from firefighter rescues studies, Ontario Fire Marshal reports, NIST research, UL Fire Safety Research Institute studies, and documented rescue incidents from the Province, participants gain a deeper understanding of how evidence and statistics can be applied to improve search strategies.

Students will learn how modern fire dynamics influence victim survivability, how occupant behaviour changes under stress, and how firefighters can prioritize search areas based on the highest probability of victim location. Through realistic hands-on scenarios, firefighters develop the skills needed to conduct rapid, coordinated, and efficient searches while operating in challenging and rapidly changing environments.
